There are lessons to be learned from the ceasefire in Gaza brokered by Donald Trump.
The first is that there was never going to be peace between Israel and the Government of Gaza until and unless the latter released the Israeli civilians it was holding hostage, and returned the bodies of those it had murdered. For two years Israel has said “return the hostages and we will end the war”. Low and behold, that is exactly what has happened. This peace was secured primarily because Israel – the stronger military power and the one able to sustain the war almost indefinitely – could trust Donald Trump.
