Ireland is, I suspect, a few weeks away from electing its first truly far-left President, by default.
This is not Catherine Connolly’s fault. The likely victor of the Presidential election (barring some significant and in my view unlikely recovery in Mrs. Humphrey’s fortunes) has done nothing wrong. She sought a nomination, convinced the left to back her, and subsequently benefitted from Sinn Fein’s inability to find a candidate of its own and the utter implosion of the Fianna Fáil campaign. She is also benefitting from Fine Gael having to run a substitute candidate following the illness of Mairead McGuinness, who would surely have been President were she on the ballot.
