In 2022, the Health Service Executive suspended all funding to the Transgender Equality Network of Ireland (TENI) because of that organisation’s repeated failure to produce complete financial accounts. In other words, the HSE suspended the supply of taxpayer money to a political lobby group because, without completed accounts, it could not be sure where the money was being spent.
Of course, this being Ireland, that decision didn’t really hurt the Transgender Equality Network at all. Just six weeks after the HSE decided it could no longer fund TENI because of the failure to produce accounts, the Department of Children came to the rescue, awarding it €93,000 to fund the creation of a “Trans Awareness Hub”. So, when one Government agency was declaring TENI unsuitable to receive state funding, another jumped in and gave them a huge wedge of cash anyway.
