Most people are familiar, on some level, with the concept of “the political pendulum”.
The basic idea is that a dominant political party or ideology will eventually become intolerably extreme for most voters, who will then switch their support to the opposite political party or ideology until that in turn becomes intolerably extreme, and then they will switch back again, in a never-ending cycle.
