As you may have heard yesterday, Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has announced that she will once again boycott this year’s “St Patrick’s Day Ceremony” in the White House. Not because of anything to do with Irish domestic politics, or the position of Ireland vis a vis American trade policy or anything like that, you understand. No – she is to repeat her boycott from last year on the grounds that the peace in Gaza negotiated by President Trump has not been favourable enough to the Palestinians, and she feels that the people of Gaza have been given short shrift internationally. Given the chance to raise this matter with President Trump, she has instead decided that she will stay at home.
Fair enough.
