On paper, this Presidential election is Heather Humphreys’ to lose. Her two opponents have glaring weaknesses: Jim Gavin is a political neophyte and an awkward communicator who has spent the week blundering through some indecipherable scandal about drones. Catherine Connolly is about as hard left as you can get in Ireland without being Paul Murphy, and spends her time alternating between insulting this country’s friends and justifying her attempts to hire convicted members of terror groups to her Dáil office.
