Some of the discourse in Ireland around Catherine Connolly’s representation of banks during her career as a lawyer is, to my mind, the very worst of politics.
Almost everybody in Ireland who owns their own home, aside from a very fortunate few, has a bank to thank for the roof over their heads. And mortgages are a fair deal: They allow people to acquire assets that appreciate over time, while the money they borrow has its value eaten away by inflation. By the time they have repaid their mortgage, almost every homeowner is vastly wealthier for having done so.
