A man called Abu Obeida died at the weekend. Or in the language of the Israeli Defence Forces, a man called Abu Obeida was eliminated at the weekend, along with several members of his family, who became collateral damage civilian casualties, as has been the way for too many civilians in the long war in Gaza.
The circumstances of Obeida’s death are typical of the war in the Gaza strip. He was the chief spokesman and propagandist for the Government of Gaza, so it was natural that when rumours emerged that the forces of Gaza’s Hamas Government had captured four living Israeli soldiers, he would have to confirm the news before broadcasting it to the world. The urgency of the need to confirm the news meant that Obeida used his phone to contact a Hamas commander, which was tracked by the Israelis. An airforce strike did the rest. He died, along with his family, in Gaza City – a high-ranking terrorist official living amongst civilians, as is the way of the war in Gaza. The unit he contacted was struck as well, also in Gaza City.
