It is now almost a decade since the then Fine Gael leader, memorably, claimed that his would be the party for “people who get up early in the morning”.
Fitting, then, that it should be a Fine Gael finance Minister who broke the news to us all that his party’s manifesto commitment to moderate tax relief for income tax payers at the middle of the income scale would be broken at the very first opportunity the government has had to break it. Instead of that party’s promised €2,000 adjustment to income tax bands (which would be worth about €800 a year to a dual-income family) we would be getting…. Nothing, again.
