I am, I confess, generally a fan of the weekly columns in the Sunday Times by DCU Professor of Politics Gary Murphy, who is an erudite and knowledgeable voice on Irish politics and whose biography of Charles Haughey is a must-read for anybody who wants to understand the evolution of modern Ireland.
That said, I mean it as no insult, nor would I imagine it would be taken as one, to describe the good Professor as an establishment man through and through. And this comment, at the end of his article about Conor McGregor’s hopeless run for the Presidency, probably sums up establishment sentiment in Ireland better than anything I could hope to muster:
