Man arrested in Belfast for biting pro-lifer in the neck

A man was arrested by police and taken away in handcuffs after he viciously attacked stewards at a pro-life event, organised by the group Precious Life in Belfast.

The attack left a steward who was volunteering at the event with a ‘serious bite to the neck’, Precious Life said. In a statement, the pro-life organisation said that the assault ‘causing actual bodily harm’ happened at a Life Chain event in front of Belfast City Hall on Saturday 5th November.

The event was organised to publicly commemorate the 4,136 unborn babies who have been aborted since the imposition of a Westminster law legalising abortion in the province. The man had been attempting to disrupt speakers during the event.

In a statement, Precious Life said: “Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth was giving a speech to the crowd assembled for the Life Chain.

“A man approached Ms Smyth from behind and began aggravating and trying to distract her. The man, who had a small child with him, continually made the gesture of a twirling motion of his finger to his head, and pointing at Ms Smyth and loudly telling the young child that Ms Smyth was crazy”.

The harassment of the Precious Life boss went on over a five minute period, the group said. Fearing Ms Smyth may be attacked while giving her speech, a female steward eventually approached the man to “politely ask him to stop his antagonistic behaviour”, Precious Life said.

In response to this, it is alleged the man immediately launched into an assault on the female steward by “grabbing her placard and shouting abuse at her”.

At this point, a man who was also stewarding the event intervened, placing himself between the assailant and the woman to “prevent him from attacking her”.

Precious Life say the assailant then began shouting at the Precious Life volunteer, and as the steward tried to restrain him, the assailant “viciously” bit the steward in the neck.

During the incident, the child screamed and ran off, the group said. The group said that police rushed to the scene to intervene, and the man was arrested and brought away in handcuffs. Precious Life said in a statement that the male steward sustained a large bite mark on his neck requiring hospital treatment after the attack, and was left shaken.

In a statement, the group said the event had been peaceful up until that point, featuring a poignant display to mark to 4,136 babies aborted since the legalisation of abortion in the historically pro-life province.

“Up until the assault, the pro-life event had been peaceful. People from across Northern Ireland lined the entire length of the Belfast City hall holding pro-life signs and banners stating – “Peace begins in the womb” and” Stop Abortion Violence”. The Life Chain was organised to mark the third anniversary of Westminster forcing abortion Northern Ireland Assembly, and to remember the 4136 babies killed since them.

“At the gates of the City Hall, a poignant display of hundreds of baby shoes was laid out to form the number 4 1 3 6 – each with a boy or girl’s name attached. Each pair of baby shoes represented an innocent life cruelly taken by the injustice of the abortion legislation that was forced on Northern Ireland by the Westminster government. The pro-life message was seen by thousands of people as they walked or drove along this busy area of Belfast,” they said.
