US President Lyndon Johnson famously said that the first rule of politics is to learn to count. This is something that opponents of European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen have yet to manage.
On Thursday, Von Der Leyen will face a motion of no confidence in her (and, by extension, in the entire EU commission including Ireland’s Michael McGrath) in the EU Parliament at Strasbourg. A majority in the European Parliament is 336 out of the 670 MEPs. When Ms Von Der Leyen was elected, she had 370 votes in favour. Indications are that she will meet or exceed that number this week when the motion of no-confidence is voted upon.
