It occurs to me on various occasions that there can be very few countries – and certainly very few relatively wealthy western ones – who remain as conflicted and divided over their own history as the Irish. Independent Ireland’s Ken O’Flynn sent this tweet yesterday, responding to the Taoiseach being quoted in an RTE documentary as saying that “the Irish were never a homogenous group”. “There is a sense now”, wrote O’Flynn, that the word “Irish” is so elastic that it is virtually meaningless”:
