Late last week, artificial intelligence giant Anthropic announced that it had been instructed by the US government to cut off access to its latest world-beating models for all foreign nationals, “whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees”.
In doing so, the American government likely gave us the clearest glimpse of the future of artificial intelligence (AI), one in which the most powerful models are blocked by governments concerned about the potential for misuse by international adversaries.
