Yesterday morning, up to fourteen Russian drones – each of them carrying an explosive payload – entered the airspace of an EU member state and NATO member. At least one home in Poland was damaged, while NATO fighters were scrambled to intercept the threat. Poland has invoked article 4 of the Alliance’s charter, which calls for an immediate meeting to discuss the threat to its sovereignty.
This should neither be downplayed, nor overstated. First, it is worth remembering that the political crisis sparked by fourteen drones entering Poland is as naught compared to the hundreds of such weapons that entered Ukraine on the same night. Poland was not exactly threatened with utter destruction.
