The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) has confirmed to Gript that it has formally recommended amending the existing Equality Acts to explicitly reference and define gender identity and gender expression in a move that would expand the potential for anti-discrimination suits by transgender individuals against companies and state bodies.
A publicly-funded statutory body operational monitoring the state’s compliance with human rights law, the IHREC made the recommendation in 2023 in a submission to the government’s review of the Equality Acts.
