The Heather Humphreys campaign has deleted a video mistaking the German Bundestag for Belfast City Hall in an ad promoting her credentials in dealing with communities North of the border.
In a video posted to social media, the Fine Gael candidate outlined how she wanted to be “a President for All” following a trip to Belfast.
“Thank you to St Dominic’s for the invitation to visit the school of our former President, Mary McAleese on the Falls Road…a lovely day in Belfast,” she said.
In the video, Humphreys outlines how she “grew up on the border” and, as a result, is familiar with “different traditions – Catholic or Protestant, Unionist or Nationalist.”
“Here in Belfast, I’m reminded that our shared future must be built on respect…”
However, the video shows an image of the Bundestag – the lower house of the German federal parliament. The German flag can be seen flying over the building.
When the error was caught after a query from the Irish Examiner, the video was quickly deleted by the campaign and re-uploaded with a correct video of Belfast City Hall.
Humphreys – a Presbyterian from a Unionist family – has used her unique background as part of her electoral pitch, arguing that she could be a uniquely unifying figure from the perspective of a United Ireland and reach out to communities in Northern Ireland who others would not be able to reach as easily.
