Diversity, Equality and Inclusion – DEI – arrived in Irish universities around 2015 under the banner of the Athena SWAN Charter, presented as a safeguard against discrimination and a commitment to fairness.
Few objected. Who could oppose equality, respect, or inclusion? But over the past decade, it seems DEI has evolved far beyond its original purpose. What began as an effort to prevent discrimination has hardened into an ideological framework that increasingly dictates how people are expected to think, speak, and behave on campus.
