I’ve been of the opinion for some time now that “the housing crisis” is the easy, mindless answer we rattle off for why people aren’t having as many children as they used to, and it’s very clear at this stage that it’s an entirely dissatisfactory answer at that.
To be clear, I don’t deny that the cost of housing, and the broader cost of living issue, are without doubt discouraging factors in the complex equation most couples engage in when weighing up whether or not to have a child, but it’s becoming ever clearer that they’re not the only factors or even the most important ones.
