Gardaí say they are investigating after a body was discovered following a fire at a house in Edenderry earlier this morning – the same house where 4-year-old Tadhg Farrell, and his great aunt, Mary Holt, were killed in a fatal fire in December.
Local emergency services attended the scene at Castleview Park this morning and the fire was brought under control by fire crews.
An Garda Síochána have confirmed that the body of an adult was found inside the premises. “A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death, which will determine the course of any Garda investigation,” they said.
The remains have yet to be formally identified.
The scene has been preserved for a full forensic examination, and gardaí said their inquiries are ongoing. They have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Independent TD Carol Nolan said “there is an air of unreality and deep pain within Offaly” after it was confirmed that an unidentified person has died in a house fire in the same property where Mary Holt and Tadgh Farrell were killed in an arson attack in Edenderry in December 2025.
Deputy Nolan said that her thoughts and prayers will be with the family of the unidentified person and the wider Edenderry community following the tragedy.
“This is profoundly shocking news to everyone waking up this morning and hearing about this incident. I want to extend my full support to the Gardaí as they investigate this death and I call on anyone who can assist them to do so immediately in terms of helping the investigation and naming this terribly unfortunate individual,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
