Eligible first-time drug offenders will now be referred to health services instead of facing immediate criminal charges, in what has been described as an “important shift” in policing policy.
In a press release published by the Department of Health today, the government announced the launch of a new Health Referral Scheme, stating it will provide a “more practical, health-led approach” to drug possession.
