A sweeping Department of Justice investigation in the United States has concluded that the FBI’s controversial 2023 memo on “radical traditionalist Catholics” stemmed from systemic analytical failures and ideological bias inside the Bureau during the Biden administration. The 231-page report was issued last week.
The memo, drafted in the FBI’s Richmond field office, proposed monitoring Catholic parishes and identifying Traditional Latin Mass attendees as potential “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists.” According to the DOJ, the memo relied on “biased, baseless information” and passed through multiple layers of review, including legal, without anyone raising constitutional concerns.
