Black smoke has billowed out of the chimney over the Sistine Chapel following another two rounds of voting on the second day of the conclave, signalling that the gathered cardinals have not yet elected the new pope.
Thousands once again gathered in St Peter’s Square this morning to await the smoke after yesterday evening’s disappointment, only to be greeted once again by the black plumes.
The 133 cardinal electors will continue their search for the 267th pontiff today, with further rounds of voting expected to take place later today.
A similar schedule is expected to be followed tomorrow if the cardinals fail to elect a pope today by the required two-thirds majority.
