Yesterday’s report by the US House Judiciary Committee on threats to freedom of speech caused by what the Committee calls “foreign censorship” makes grim reading for Ireland, as it should.
There are a few things to note about the report, but we’ll start with the most important: It leaves absolutely no room for doubt that Europe’s regulation of political speech on the internet, in which Ireland is a key player, is absolutely and explicitly politically motivated. No reader of the report could be left in any doubt but that the objective of Europe’s Digital Services Act and other censorship measures is to materially restrict the growth of right-wing, nationalist, and anti-immigration sentiment within Europe.
