In terms of taxes in coffers, successive governments have never had it so good. There’s been enough money pouring in to allow for the most lavish largesse, and successive Coalitions have taken to that with gusto.
As I observed last week, government spending has doubled since 2016 and it expected to reach a whopping €120 million spend in 2025 (though overruns are likely). That’s an extraordinary rise in spend given that we seem to see very little progress with the problems the country faces.
