When I lived in London, one thing I often noticed on the tube was the sheer volume of advertisements for egg freezing and sperm banks. What better way to spend a crowded rush hour on the Central line – already hot, claustrophobic, and intensely packed – than to be confronted with the panel directly in your line of vision advertising this appealing prospect: create a child with a total stranger because you’ve been so busy working that your biological clock is running down.
The irony, of course, is that many of the ordinary commuters miserably enduring the rush-hour crushes are women in their late twenties and thirties who have chosen a way of life that has timed them, or is timing them out, of meeting someone and starting a family.
