A major investigation is underway after a man pulled a firearm on three Gardaí during a struggle in Dublin city centre this morning, in an incident that highlights the “potential dangers” faced by police, the Garda Commissioner has said.
In a statement issued today, Gardaí at Store Street confirmed they are appealing for witnesses following the altercation, which Commissioner Justin Kelly said demonstrated the “bravery” of the members involved.
The incident began shortly before 5 a.m. when officers on active patrol along Abbey Street spotted a male cyclist behaving suspiciously.
When the Gardaí attempted to speak with the individual, he fled the area and was chased by two uniformed officers and one trainee.
Upon catching up with the suspect, a physical confrontation occurred, resulting in one officer sustaining minor injuries from an assault.
During this struggle, the man produced a weapon and aimed it directly at the Gardaí, who were forced to take cover.
The suspect then threw the firearm into the River Liffey as he escaped the scene.
An ammunition magazine from the gun was left behind and has been secured for forensic testing.
Authorities noted that a preliminary assessment of this magazine suggests the weapon was a realistic imitation firearm.
Commissioner Justin Kelly praised the officers for their response to the threat, noting that he has since spoken with the three Gardaí to check on their welfare.
“I want to commend the bravery of all the Garda involved,” Commissioner Kelly said.
“This incident demonstrates once again the potential dangers that our members face every day they put on their uniform and go out to work. It is also another in a long line of examples of how Gardaí regularly go above and beyond in fulfilling our mission of keeping people safe.”
Searches of the surrounding area and the river bed are currently ongoing in an effort to locate the discarded weapon.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the event to come forward.
They are particularly interested in speaking with individuals or motorists who have camera or dash-cam footage from Abbey Street, Jervis Street, the Quays, and Temple Bar between 4:45 am and 5:15 am on Saturday, 31st of October 2026.
Anyone with relevant information has been asked to contact Store Street Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any local station as inquiries continue.
