At a meeting of the Central Area committee of Dublin City Council on Tuesday, Councillor Malachy Steenson had a motion on policing ruled out of order by the Council management – which he pointed out are not councillors.
He did manage to speak on another policing and crime related motion as contained in the video.
Councillor Steenson’s motion had demanded that the Garda Commissioner attend a Council meeting to discuss “The breakdown of law and order” and his decision “not to prosecute those caught with drugs for personal possession despite this committee’s rejection of such a proposal as set out by the Oireachtas.”

Steenson also referred to “what is going on in Store Street Station’ – saying that there are now [Garda] members before the Courts charged with assisting an Organised Crime Gang, with over 200 charges between them.”
Councillor Steenson demanded to know “why were charges against Inspector Roberts dropped and who decided firstly to charge him and then drop the charges last Friday?”
Steenson claimed that failure of the Gardaí to engage with the Council and local community and the failure of the Commissioner to answer the questions put to him “will lead to a further reduction in the confidence of our constituents in the Gardaí.”
He also said that a member of an organised gang previously being a member of Dublin City Council – referring to Jonathan Dowdall, who was a councillor for Sinn Féin at the time.
