The government is today claiming that the numbers of people who have applied for International Protection here has fallen significantly since the new International Protection Act came into effect on June 12. That legislation was approved by the Oireachtas as part of the Irish state’s implementation of the provisions of the EU Migration Pact.
Overall, the number of applicants for 2026 was down 20% to the end of August. If that rate is maintained the total for the year will be around 10,500 compared to 13,162 for the whole of 2025.
