Italy is preparing to introduce €75 fines for pedestrians who step onto crossings while staring at their phones, following a local safety campaign in Sassari, a city in north-west Sardinia, which showed a clear drop in accidents.
The idea stems from a 2016 initiative in Sassari, where police logged 94 pedestrian- related incidents and sent officers to monitor behaviour at busy junctions.
