It is one of those annual media-events that is as predictable as a wildebeest migration across the Serengeti; pictures of squealing girls hugging one another in ecstasy at their Leaving Cert results. Each girl has gathered enough points to qualify as Mark Zuckerberg’s personal attorney. In roughly four years’ time, most of them will emerge from their useless universities with useless pieces of paper certifying to useless degrees. but now burdened with debts to a not-remotely useless bank that knows exactly how to extract money from the duped and hapless.
Education is now the foremost Ponzi scheme in the western world, and like all such schemes, it promises happiness, wealth and health. It duly delivers debt, despair and delusion. To be sure, there are occasional exceptions, such as when a student whose brain-matter resembles an unfried doughnut manages to get a place in university. Three years later, the student emerges with a pass degree in social studies, leading to a lifelong career of hysteria, ignorance and stupidity. Sounds great? Indeed: but not everyone can become a People Before Profit TD.
