Independent TD for Cork North Central Ken O’Flynn has said that claims made by the Minister for Justice that he was “obliged” to ensure the confidentiality of the identities of criminally charged asylum seekers are “ludicrous”.
Deputy O’Flynn’s comments came after Jim O’Callaghan doubled down on a law that prohibits the publication of a person’s status as an asylum claimant in Ireland even if that person has been charged or convicted of a serious crime, saying he and his officials are “legally obliged” to ensure that this information is “kept confidential”.
