A man is due in court this morning after the Garda Armed Support Unit was called to a knife-related incident in Dundalk.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that, “Last evening (Monday 20th July 2026) at approximately 9.30 pm, Gardaí responded to an incident involving a male armed with a knife at an open carpark in Dundalk, Co. Louth, in which “frontline Uniform Gardaí were supported by Armed Support Unit personnel.”
The spokesperson added that “Gardaí engaged with the male to try and de-escalate the situation and directed him to drop the knife,” and that after the man did not comply, Gardaí from the Armed Support Unit “discharged one round from a 40mm less-lethal force option.”
This action led to officers succeeding in disarming the man, who was arrested and detained at a Garda station in Dundalk.
The male (aged in his 30s) who was arrested has since been charged in relation to this investigation.
