Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín says salary increases for the state water service, Uise Éireann, should be stopped until the utility starts meeting its objectives.
The Meath West TD was reacting to news that Uisce Éireann’s CEO will receive a pay rise that amounts in total to well over €100,000 this year.
Deputy Tóibín said the state water company’s failures are holding up vital housebuilding in Ireland.
He said: “It’s absolutely incredible we have a situation where an organisation which is not delivering is receiving bonuses and wage increases.
“We know Uisce Éireann was fined €20million last year for not fulfilling their objectives on reducing leaks on target.
“Due to their shortcomings, we are paying for water and allowing it to leak through the pipelines.
“Uisce Éireann have admitted to me it will take until 2050 until all the leaks stopping house building are fixed.
“I know of at least three housing estates in my constituency held up because Uisce Éireann has not made the necessary connections to them.
“We are now asking to stop the increase in salary while Uisce Éireann cannot deliver on their objectives.”
Deputy Tóibín was responding to news today that Uisce Éireann CEO Niall Gleeson will receive an overall rise of €118,000 on his pay package this year.
It was revealed in the 2025 annual report for the state-owned utility which also showed that last year, bonus payments for staff increased by 36.5% to €17.84million.
