There will be a no-confidence vote in the government this week, which will put some of the Independents supporting the current messy Coalition in a sticky position. But it really should be a no-brainer. The Cabinet can bluster all it wants and send in Gardaí with pepper-spray and the Army until the cows come home: they have lost the public on this and many other issues.
I reported from the fuel protest in O’Connell Street on Saturday and talked to many of the farmers, hauliers and small business owners who say that the government’s policy of relentlessly pushing up the price of fuel may have been brought to a head by the war on Iran but has actually been driving them, and many others, to despair for a long time.
