Gardaí are investigating allegations related to the alleged use of “malicious software” at a third-level institution.
A spokesperson said, “An Garda Síochána, Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB) has been carrying out an investigation into the activities of an employee at a 3rd Level Educational Institution involving the use of Malicious Software (Malware), facilitating unauthorised access of student personal data.”
Gardaí say the investigation commenced following a complaint and information received from the 3rd Level Educational Institution in late 2023.
In response to the complaint investigating Gardaí carried out several searches both at the Educational Institution and at a private domestic address of the suspected offender in 2024.
Following an analysis of devices seized during searches, An Garda Síochána arrested and detained a male (aged in his 50s) in May 2025.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the suspect be charged with multiple offences connected with this investigation.
The male was arrested this morning, 20th March 2026 and will appear before District Court 4, Criminal Courts of Justice today.
The Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau says it has and continues to “engage with identified victims and the 3rd Level Educational Institution involved in this investigation.”
