Consider the following set of facts: In 2020, during the pandemic, a member of the Gardai decided to lend a bicycle that was in his garden shed to an elderly neighbour, a farmer. That bicycle was not technically his to lend, since it was “unclaimed property” in the possession of the Gardai, with a sticker on it designating it as such. The Garda who lent it, being aware of this fact, informed his superior officers in advance of deciding to lend the bike out.
On foot of this, his home was raided by a team of Gardai, attempting to establish that he had committed a crime. He was suspended from duty for three years.
