Following yesterday’s High Court ruling that damages be awarded to a pair of homeless asylum seekers, it appears the apparatus of the Irish State has brought about a situation in which it now finds itself bearing greater responsibility for housing the world than it does its own citizens.
This is because it’s going to be a long time – never – before you see the State paying damages of any kind to the growing number of Irish citizens who find themselves without stable accommodation, emergency or otherwise. And yet, the Judiciary has created precedent for an ultimately untold number of similar claims for damages from homeless international protection applicants.
