I walked into the waiting room to collect my daughter from dance on Saturday and every single person was on their phone. In the corner, on two couches were four teenage girls. They were all on their smartphones. They didn’t talk to each other, they didn’t look at each other. They didn’t say a word. On the other couch at the other wall, were four other girls sitting on another couch also all on their phones. They were actually talking to each other, discussing something on the phones.
Then a husband and wife walked in and each took out their smartphones. I by sheer coincidence was reading Against the Machine, on the Unmaking of Humanity by Paul Kingsnorth. It is without a doubt the most depressing book I have read. Mr Kingsnorth is on Substack.
