Two people have been killed in a high-speed collision involving British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria.
The accident occurred near the Sagamu Interchange, north-east of Lagos, as the 6’6” former heavyweight champion was traveling from the city toward his family home in a Lexus.
The vehicle involved, a Lexus SUV carrying five men, reportedly slammed into a stationary truck. According to officials from the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary investigations suggest the car was speeding while attempting to overtake another vehicle before the impact.
While two of the occupants were tragically killed in the crash, Anthony Joshua was rescued from the wreckage alive. Emergency responders confirmed he sustained only minor injuries.
Two other individuals who were in the vehicle at the time of the collision were reportedly unharmed.
Joshua has reportedly been taken away to receive medical attention.
Just hours before the crash, he had been on social media posting videos of himself playing table tennis in a jubilant mood.
Police arrived at the scene within three minutes of the initial report to secure the area and assist with the rescue. There has been no official statement yet from Joshua’s representatives regarding the identities of those tragically lost in the accident, or what vehicle they were travelling in at the time of the incident.
The tragedy comes just after the 36-year-old’s boxing match against YouTube influencer Jake Paul on December 19th, in which he secured a knockout in the sixth round.
During the fight, Joshua broke Paul’s jaw and took home a reported $93 million purse.
