Article 8 of the Hamas Charter reads, when translated into plain English, as follows: “Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.”
This is a motto that the organisation has always lived by. It explains almost everything that happens in Gaza, because when Hamas talks about “death being the loftiest of wishes” it does not simply mean the deaths of its own fighters. It also means the deaths of Palestinian men, women, and children with no connection to the organisation.
