The two party system in the United States, as we know it today, dates to the Presidential Election of 1856, when the Democrat James Buchanan defeated the Republican Party’s first ever nominee, John C. Fremont.
Since then, every single election has been won by a member of one of those two parties. For those counting at home, the Republicans have won 24 Presidential Elections to 18 for the Democrats. Meanwhile, Democrats have controlled the US Congress for 96 years compared to just 74 for the Republicans.
