The proximate cause of the rioting that has damaged Los Angeles over the past three days is that the Trump administration, to its credit, is attempting to enforce that country’s immigration laws.
Enforcing immigration laws in California is not something that the state of California does itself, by choice: A piece of legislation called the “California Values Act” explicitly prohibits police forces in that state from enforcing federal immigration laws or assisting federal government agencies that seek to do so. As a result of that law, California has long attracted illegal immigrants to the United States, many of whom live in Los Angeles.
