Years ago, when Donald Trump started promising to “put America first” economically, many in Ireland rolled their eyes and wrote him off as a harmless orange oaf, fit only for mockery and dismissal.
Fast forward to today, and that promise has come home to us in the form of crucifying tariffs that threaten the very foundation of our economic model and standard of living. It’s not that we didn’t have warning that this could happen – the writing has been on the wall since before 2016. We just didn’t bother listening.
