When I was 18 and just finished my Leaving Cert, my original life plan was not actually to go into media. My first instinct was to go to college and study Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity, so that I could join either the Gardaí or the Irish Defence Forces and go into counter-terrorism.
Bear in mind that this was in 2016, just after the infamous Charlie Hebdo killings, as well as the Nice and Paris attacks, the Brussels bombings, the Berlin Christmas market attack, and more. Around this time Ireland had massive attacks right nextdoor in the UK, like the Manchester Arena bombing and so on. And so it was in this context that, fresh out of secondary school, I was determined to join the European war effort against this kind of heinous terrorism.
