Following the announcement that hundreds of asylum seekers are to be accommodated at a north Dublin site originally intended for a ‘super prison,’ Senator Michael McDowell has said that the campus “must be” used to replace Mountjoy in the future.
Reports that the Thornton Hall site in north county Dublin will be operational within the next six weeks as an asylum seeker camp have sparked renewed concern about prison overcrowding, as the plot was originally earmarked to provide a 1,400-place prison.
