Politics-watchers this week will have seen the dramatic resignation of Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, after just over a year in office. As is the way of things, his seat hadn’t cooled a jot before speculation launched as to who would succeed him. Little is clear at this point, but, perhaps, for one thing: Scotland’s first Muslim leader is under no circumstances to be followed by a Christian.
This afternoon, the Scottish National Party’s Kate Forbes ruled herself out of the SNP leadership race so as to back her colleague, John Swinney, a move which will have resulted in a collective sigh of relief among a not-insignificant segment of the Scottish political and media elite.
