Senator Sharon Keogan has blasted the government saying that they voted against EU protections on freedom of speech in relation to the Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022 which is currently being debated in the Seanad.
During the latest session of debate on the Bill, Keogan said that the government had knowingly voted against European Union provisions which would have protected the fundamental right of freedom of speech but are acting as though they had no choice but to pass the controversial new hate speech law.
This, she said, “really does show a staggering contempt for the rule of law and the intelligence of the Irish people,”
The Seanad is currently debating possible amendments to the bill with a proposal to delay it for six months tabled by Senator Michael McDowell being voted down yesterday.
