Members of the public in Coleraine, County Derry have been praised for their “extreme bravery” after they tackled and disarmed a masked man who was brandishing a machete in an incident part of which was captured on video.
23-year old Corrie Gordon is charged in relation to three counts of common assault and one charge of making a threat to kill, possessing a bladed weapon on the Bushmills Road in Coleraine, being in possession of class A cocaine and possessing class C pregabalin.
The offences are alleged to have taken place on the 14th of June last.
Judge Nigel Broderick addressed those who interviewed saying “members of the public, I have to say, exhibited extreme bravery in confronting the defendant, who was armed with a dangerous weapon”.
Gordon, who appeared before Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link, is reported to have an address at Cappagh Avenue in Portstewart.
The court heard that he brandished a 24 inch bladed weapon on the street before members of the public intervened, restraining and disarming him.
It was reported that the incident came about after a social media based disagreement Gordon had with a member of staff at an Egyptian barber shop.
Gordon dressed all in black and donned a face mask before entering the barber shop where he allegedly chased the subject of the dispute into a back room and caused two others to fear for their safety.
A bail application was refused after prosecuting officers told the court that Gordon is “under investigation” in relation to possession of a flick knife two weeks ago with Judge Broderick adjourning the case to July 10.
