A 15-year-old girl was attacked twice within the space of minutes by two groups of teens in Stephen’s Green last weekend, a mum has said.
Speaking to Joe Duffy on RTÉ Liveline this week, she described the “nightmare” as her daughter was beaten twice by two separate groups who knew each other within about 4 or 5 minutes in broad daylight.
“They kicked her, pulled her hair, kicked her in the face and body,” the mum said.
“She has bruises on her legs, stomach, arms, knees, hands, her face is all bruised and she’s just gone back to school. Imagine her first day back.
“The second group was called by the first group. They knew each other, they called each other to join in.
“All her friends were in shock when it happened, she was with three other girls, they were paralysed, they didn’t know what to do.
“In my head, there were adults watching this, why wouldn’t they call the police?
“I was in shock when it happened, I think it’s a nightmare, that I’m just having a bad dream that this happened to my daughter.
“She’s scared, she doesn’t know why it happened and why would someone do that.”
The woman added that the family had had to tell the principal of the school what had happened, and that her daughter had received a lot of sympathy and support from her fellow students.
She added that she believes social media played a role in the attack.
“I think they recognised her from some social media because they’re teenagers”, the distressed mum said.
“She was probably posting something, they knew who she was and decided to go for her, I don’t know the reason for it.
“Teenagers, sometimes they have the location activated on Snapchat and things like that, other people can see where they are, what they’re doing and who they’re hanging out with. They’re easy to find.
“The girls that attacked her probably recognised her from social media.”
